#127: RISING STARS 1-2-1: A Unique Step Forward for Maltese Taekwondo

Following the success of Rising Stars I and Rising Stars II, the third installment in the series — Rising Stars 1-2-1 — was successfully held yesterday, continuing to build momentum for athlete development in Malta.

This edition introduced a fresh and purposeful concept: a low-pressure competitive environment designed purely for experience.

With no trophies, medals, or formal honours at stake, the focus was placed entirely on giving Malta-based athletes the invaluable opportunity to perform under real competitive conditions — fighting in front of spectators within a structured, professional setting.

The event featured a total of 34 matches, all expertly managed by Romano Biondi (5th Dan), ensuring a smooth and high-quality competitive experience throughout. Organisation of the event was led by Gianluca Barbara (5th Dan), with the scope of driving development within the local Taekwondo scene.

Participants were grouped primarily by general ability level, with flexibility applied across weight, age, and belt categories. This approach allowed athletes to compete in multiple matches where possible, maximizing their mat time and overall learning experience.

The event showcased an impressive age range, with the youngest competitor just four years old and the oldest 39. In a memorable opening, two debutants—Mila Barbara (4) and Maria Gellel (5) — stepped onto the mat, setting the tone for a day centered on courage, growth, and participation.

In addition, coach Mauro Busuttil a former senior national athlete made his return to the mat, participating in two matches against a junior national team athlete and a senior heavyweight.

Gratitude is extended to the Malta Taekwondo Association (MTA) for their continued support, particularly Anna Vassallo, President of the MTA, and Michelle Chircop, whose assistance contributed to the smooth running of the event.

A special thank you also goes to the dedicated volunteers: Jean Schembri, Brayden Micallef, Nia Tabakova, Aretina Chamaleli, Kimberly Barbara, and Steve Barbara. Appreciation is also extended to the coaches Czarek Odlanicki, Ditmir Vodinaj, and Mauro Busuttil for their guidance and support on the day, as well as Shania Cardona for overseeing medical duties.

Above all, the event stood as a fantastic display of sportsmanship, skill, and community spirit — reinforcing the core values of Taekwondo while nurturing the next generation of athletes.

Rising Stars 1-2-1 has once again demonstrated that success in sport is not only measured in medals, but in experience, courage, and growth.
